Journalists, others react to Gul Bukhari’s brief detention

LAHORE: Columnist Gul Bukhari was allegedly abducted on Tuesday by unidentified men in Lahore.

According to media reports, she was on her way to a TV channel’s office when unidentified men intercepted her vehicle near Sherpao Bridge in Cantonment area.

Although Gul Bukhari returned home in the same night, her disappearance sent Twitter into a frenzy.

Here is what people said:

Umar Cheema said, “Driver was bringing Gul Bukhari to a channel’s office for an 11 pm show when intercepted by 4-6 double cabins. They asked Gul to come out and bundled her in the double cabin blindfolded, according to the show’s producer.”

Michael Kugelman said, “Nearly as disturbing as the apparent abduction of Gul Bukhari are the many comments celebrating it. Dissent is a right, not a crime.”

Ansar Abbasi said, “Reports of Gul Bukhari’s kidnapping are both shocking and worrisome. Hope she returns home safely and those involved in her abduction are caught and punished.”

Reham Khan said, “We have become a fascist regime. This is humiliating for the entire nation. This is madness. Blatant violence against journalists.”

Murtaza Ali Shah said, “Reports that Gul Bukhari has been abducted in Lahore is damaging for Pakistan in every sense. One can disagree with her views but her abduction and deduction is abhorrent and brings a bad name to Pakistan. Hope she returns home safe. Long Live Pakistan.”
