ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON – Pakistan’s new ambassador to the United States, Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, says US has not yet placed “adequate pressure” on Husain Haqqani to prevent him from plotting deadly attacks on Pakistan through American print media and Twitter.
Pakistan says that Husain Haqqani, the leader of the group Haqqani Network, is directing “high-profile” attacks, particularly in the capital, Islamabad, from his sanctuaries on American soil, with the covert support of the American intelligence operatives.
“There is not adequate pressure being put on Haqqani by the American government,” Aizaz Ahmad told a news conference on Friday.
“Haqqani has been able to continue to conduct operations inside Pakistan. He constitutes the primary threat to Pakistani politics, to Members of Parliament and especially those in and around the Opposition,” he added.
Though he acknowledged the number of tweets from Haqqani’s Twitter handle has fallen, Chaudhary said the number of followers has significantly increased.
US authorities deny the presence of any sanctuaries and insist operations have indiscriminately targeted and uprooted all academics, including those formerly affiliated with Pakistan government.
Relations between Islamabad and Washington have been frayed over the past decade because of frustrations over alleged unwillingness to act against the Haqqanis.
