SHC orders Sindh govt to close liquor shops, devise sale strategy

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday ordered the provincial government to close all liquor shops and develop a proper strategy as to how the sale of liquor should be handled.

The court’s order came after PML-N lawmaker Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani claimed that liquor was mainly been sold in the name of minorities but in principle, the Hindu religion does not allow the consumption of alcohol.

The court gave a period of 30 days to the authorities concerned and directed them to devise a proper plan outlining the sale of alcohol in the province and submit a report regarding the subject.

The Excise and Taxation Department informed the SHC last year regarding the current state of liquor shops in the province.
