A young man, who stabbed his 16-year-old sister to death in the name of ‘honour’ in Karachi last month, appeared before a local court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty.

Hayat Khan, aged 20, had stabbed his sister Sumaira multiple times after beating her severely in their house in Orangi Town’s Fareed Colony on April 28. He then threw her out of the house where she continued to bleed and writhe in pain as neighbours gathered.

Mobile phone footage, shot by an unidentified spectator, shows several men standing around Sumaira, who is lying face down, dressed in a red tunic and an orange headscarf and draped in a blanket.

The suspect was arrested and charged for the murder. He told interrogators that that he had caught his sister talking to a boy at the doorstep of their house.

Hayat confessed that he quarreled with his sister before stabbing her to death with a kitchen knife.

“I was so angry that I killed my sister Sumaira,” he told the judge.

The suspect said that his father, who was also under police custody, had nothing to do with the murder.

Hundreds of women are murdered by their relatives in Pakistan each year for defending family ‘honour’.
