NATO optimistic about Pakistani routes

Even though deals with other neighbouring countries of Afghanistan have provided alternatives, NATO continues to hope that Pakistan will reopen its supply routes.

Pakistani supply routes into Afghanistan were closed for NATO following the November 26 NATO air strikes on Pakistani soldiers. The strikes killed 24 Pakistani soldiers and the supply routes have been closed ever since despite extensive negotiations.

The US negotiations team returned back without reaching any conclusive decision. However, NATO’s chief says that he believes Pakistan will take action and reopen the routes in the near future.

US has established alternate routes into Afghanistan through Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. However, they are less convenient and more expensive.
