The world has just five years to avoid being trapped in a scenario of perilous climate change and extreme weather events. Rising fossil energy use will lead to irreversible and potentially catastrophic climate change.
The door to 2°C, the ceiling for averting unmanageable climate damage, is closing. Governments must engineer a shift away from carbon intensive fossil fuels. Carbon emissions must be curbed to keep atmospheric concentration of Carbon Dioxide under 450 parts per million to limit the rise in global warming to 2°C. Business-as-usual emissions will put us on a dangerous track toward a 6°C increase, heralding violent extremes of drought, flooding, heat waves, storms and rising sea levels. The planets average temperature has risen by about 1°C over the last century. Forecasts for future warming, without course correction, are an additional 5°C by 2100. The future of our children is in our hands.
