Punjab ensures swift rainwater drainage amid prolonged monsoon rains: CM Punjab

 LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Saturday said the provincial government's comprehensive monsoon preparedness and round-the-clock field operations had enabled the clearance of rainwater from roads, markets and residential areas within hours despite 10 consecutive days of heavy monsoon rains, as she continued to personally monitor drainage efforts across Punjab and ordered strict vigilance following a landslide near Murree's Jhika Gali.

According to an official handout issued here, torrential monsoon rains have continued across Punjab over the past 10 days, with the province setting a new benchmark in the timely disposal of rainwater. Unlike previous years, when drainage operations often took weeks, accumulated rainwater is now being cleared within hours.

The handout said the chief minister was personally overseeing drainage operations in every district and city. Commissioners, deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners and Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) teams remained in the field throughout the rainfall in various areas of Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad and Sargodha divisions.

It said the drainage system remained fully operational in Lahore, Sialkot, Narowal, Hafizabad, Chichawatni, Gujrat, Sheikhupura and Kasur, ensuring the prompt disposal of rainwater.

The handout added that rain continued throughout the night in different parts of Lahore, while the entire drainage system remained active to ensure the immediate removal of accumulated rainwater. WASA teams stayed deployed at Liberty Roundabout and adjoining areas, preventing any water accumulation despite continuous rainfall.

It further said Circular Road, Sheranwala Gate, Farooq Ganj Mohalla and their adjoining main roads and markets remained clear, while successful drainage operations at Mazang Chungi and surrounding localities kept the roads open for traffic.

According to the handout, Jain Mandir Chowk was also cleared despite overnight rainfall, allowing traffic to continue uninterrupted.

It added that WASA teams remained present at Lakshmi Chowk during several hours of heavy rainfall and did not allow water to accumulate.

CM orders strict monitoring after Murree landslide

Meanwhile, on the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, relief operations are continuing in areas affected by a landslide near Jhika Gali in Murree.

Rescue 1122 teams and Scouts personnel are carrying out relief activities under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner Murree Zaheer Abbas Shirazi.

The chief minister has sought a report on the situation in the affected area near Jhika Gali and appreciated the district administration as well as Rescue 1122 officers and personnel for their timely and safe response.

The Punjab chief minister also directed the authorities to maintain strict monitoring across Murree in view of the possibility of further landslides.

“Standing with the people in every difficult time is the essence of good governance,” the chief minister said.
