Pakistan Customs says it registered a case after nearly 900 air conditioners were found hidden inside a shipment declared as scrap. Officials allege misdeclaration to evade duties and taxes.

KARACHI: Pakistan Customs has registered a case against an importer after officials allegedly discovered nearly 900 air conditioners concealed inside a shipment declared as scrap.
According to Customs authorities, the consignment was inspected after officials grew suspicious of its contents. During the examination, hundreds of air conditioning units were allegedly recovered instead of the declared scrap material.
Officials said the goods had allegedly been misdeclared in an attempt to evade customs duties and taxes.
A case has been registered against the importer under the relevant customs laws, while further investigations are under way to determine whether others were involved in the alleged smuggling attempt.
Customs authorities said legal proceedings have been initiated and the seized consignment has been taken into custody pending completion of the investigation.
The department reiterated its commitment to taking strict action against customs fraud, smuggling and the misdeclaration of imported goods.
