LAHORE: A 10-year-old class six student was found dead in the washroom of a tuition centre in Lahore’s Ichhra area on Thursday, police said.

Initial police reports stated the girl had gone with her two sisters, aged 13 and six, to a nearby house where two women were providing tuition to students. Her father, an auto-rickshaw driver, said he received a call from the tuition centre at around 4pm informing him that his daughter had suddenly fainted. He said he reached the place immediately and took her to hospital on a motorbike, where doctors pronounced her dead.

The father said doctors told him there was a rope mark on the child’s neck. DIG Operations Faisal Kamran said, citing preliminary findings, that the girl might have died by suicide because, according to her family, she had previously attempted to take her own life. Police were also told by the family that a few days earlier she had asked her parents for pocket money, which they had refused.

Police said the child had gone to the washroom and was found unconscious about 15 minutes later. Faisal Kamran said no male presence had apparently been confirmed at the site, though investigators were examining the death from different angles. The body was shifted to the morgue for a post-mortem. Referring to the medical examination, the DIG said the exact cause of death would be determined after the autopsy.
