PPP upbeat about AJK election prospects

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) believes it is well placed to make major gains in the upcoming Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections, with the party saying unrest in the valley has reshaped the political environment.

PPP leader Chaudhry Riaz said the party expected a historic result and was looking to benefit from what he described as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz's decline.

Riaz linked that assessment to continuing protests across AJK, saying the demonstrations had shifted the political mood in the region. He maintained that growing dissatisfaction with the ruling PML-N had created an opportunity for the PPP to emerge as the leading political force in the elections.

The party was confident that public discontent with the current ruling setup, together with the changing situation on the ground, could translate into a sweeping electoral performance for the PPP in the contest ahead.
