KARACHI: Football supporters packed Lyari International Football Stadium on Monday to watch Brazil’s World Cup knockout match against Japan, with celebrations breaking out after the South American side secured victory and advanced to the last 16.
The screening drew fans of different ages from Lyari, the Karachi neighbourhood long associated with football and widely known for its strong backing of Brazil. The area is often referred to as Mini Brazil, and the atmosphere at the stadium reflected that support as spectators followed the tense contest on a large LED screen.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab also joined the crowd at the stadium, which has been hosting public screenings of FIFA World Cup 2026 matches. According to Dawn, the match being shown was played in Houston.
Brazil eventually went through after substitute Gabriel Martinelli scored in the 96th minute to settle the game against Japan. The late goal sparked scenes of jubilation inside the stadium, where supporters celebrated Brazil’s progress to the next round.
