PARIS: Trayvon Bromell defeated fellow American Noah Lyles in the men’s 100 metres at the Paris Diamond League on Sunday, clocking 9.91 seconds from lane eight after the Olympic champion made a poor start.
Lyles, who came into the race as the favourite, was unable to recover from a disastrous getaway. Speaking after the race, he said: "I’m good. The feeling at the start was not what I expected."
Bromell, a two-time world bronze medallist, took the win in one of the headline results of the meet.
In the women’s 800m, Switzerland’s Audrey Werro extended her strong run of form with another victory, setting a Diamond League record of 1 minute 53.80 seconds. Femke Broeders-Bol, who has moved over from the 400m hurdles, finished second in a personal best of 1:55.60 as she continued her progress over two laps.
Werro’s performance was reported as the third fastest women’s 800m ever recorded, bringing her closer to the long-standing world record of 1:53.28 set by Jarmila Kratochvilova of then-Czechoslovakia in 1983. In the men’s 400m, Botswana’s world champion Busang Collen Kebinatshipi won in 43.54 seconds, a time that set both a meet record and a Diamond League record.
