ISLAMABAD: A petition has been filed in the Federal Shariat Court challenging parts of the Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Ordinance, 2026, which set 18 years as the minimum age for marriage.
The petition was submitted by Mufti Aslam through his counsel, Advocate Mudassar Chaudhry. In the plea, the governor of Punjab, through the secretary, along with other respondents, has been made a party to the case.
Sections 2(d) and 3 of the Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Ordinance, 2026, are inconsistent with both the Constitution and the injunctions of Islam. The petitioner has asked the Federal Shariat Court to declare those provisions illegal and repugnant to Islamic injunctions.
The case centres on the ordinance’s provision prescribing 18 years as the minimum age for marriage in Punjab. No further details about the hearing or any immediate court proceedings were stated.
