NEW DELHI: Senior security officials from India and Iran met in New Delhi on Monday as representatives of BRICS countries gathered in the Indian capital for talks focused on security issues, according to India’s foreign ministry. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi was also in attendance at the meeting of national security officials.
India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval held talks with Ghadir Nezamipour, a senior member of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. India’s foreign ministry said the two sides discussed the ongoing situation in the Middle East as well as bilateral ties between India and Iran.
The meeting comes as India continues to manage its relations with both Tehran and Washington. India has traditionally maintained cordial relations with Iran, while also having to balance its ties with the United States, particularly during the recent weeks of conflict in the Middle East. India relies heavily on imported energy and that its fuel supplies were badly affected during the US-Iran war.
China-Iran engagement on the sidelines
Iran’s embassy in New Delhi said in a post on X that Nezamipour also met Wang during the BRICS gathering. According to the embassy, the two discussed the implementation of the peace agreement, and the Iranian side conveyed appreciation for China’s political support.
According to a readout issued by China’s foreign ministry in Beijing, Wang told Nezamipour that China supports Iran in protecting its sovereignty, security and national dignity. The Chinese foreign minister also said Beijing welcomes the start of follow-up consultations between Tehran and Washington.
Wang said China is prepared to work with Iran to expand high-level contacts, reinforce political trust and deepen practical cooperation in order to ensure the stable and lasting development of bilateral relations.
Broader BRICS participation
Other BRICS representatives, including officials from Russia, South Africa and Brazil, are also in New Delhi for the meeting. India’s foreign ministry said last week that the talks would focus on non-traditional security challenges.
The ministry said participants would discuss the fast-changing nature of national security threats and the role of new technologies in shaping emerging risks.
Wang last visited New Delhi in August 2025. Relations between India and China have improved gradually since the June 2020 clash along their disputed Himalayan border, in which 20 Indian soldiers and at least four Chinese troops were killed.
