PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Friday laid out a Rs2.17 trillion budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in the provincial assembly, with budget papers showing an estimated fiscal deficit of Rs48 billion.
Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, while delivering the budget speech, said PTI lawmakers in the provincial assembly had unanimously agreed to move ahead with the budget presentation. The move came after uncertainty over the budget session, amid reports that the provincial government had linked the matter to a meeting with jailed PTI founder Imran Khan.
Afridi told the assembly that the budget carried a Rs48bn deficit, but said the provincial government would not borrow to cover the gap. He said the amount would instead be arranged from the province’s own resources.
In his speech, the chief minister also said the budget had been framed in line with the Federal Board of Revenue’s Rs15.2 trillion tax collection target. He further said there would be no grants for the Centre in the provincial budget.
