Only this many public toilets for millions in Punjab? Report leaves people stunned

LAHORE: So here’s a number that has people doing a double take.

Punjab has 1,420 public toilets.

Yes — for a province with millions upon millions of people.

And now here’s the part that really has people reacting: 127 of them don’t even work.

The Punjab Local Government and Community Development (LG&CD) Department submitted the report to the Lahore High Court (LHC), and while the data is official, the internet reaction has been anything but calm.

Because the real question people are asking is simple:
is this actually enough for a population this big?

According to the report, 1,293 toilets are functional across the province. These include facilities for men, women, transgender persons, persons with disabilities, and combined-use units.

But online, the conversation is less about the numbers — and more about reality.

Because anyone who has used public facilities in the region knows what people are already saying: even the “functional” ones are often far from ideal.

The report was submitted in response to a petition by the Judicial Activism Panel (JAP), which raised concerns over whether sanitation infrastructure is anywhere close to population needs.

The court proceedings also highlighted Section 183 of the Punjab Local Government Act, 2025, which requires local governments to provide and maintain public latrines and urinals across the province.

A technical committee reviewed data from 229 local governments using official dashboards and compiled the findings in June 2026.

During the hearing, the petitioner’s counsel argued that Punjab’s sanitation system does not meet international standards, especially when measured against population size.

The court has now asked for further written submissions before the next hearing.

But outside the courtroom, the reaction is simpler — and louder.

Millions of people. Limited facilities. And a system everyone says they already know too well.
