Wind and fast greens set stern test as US Open practice opens at Shinnecock

SHINNECOCK HILLS: Practice rounds for this week’s 126th US Open got under way on Monday at Shinnecock Hills, where strong winds, thick rough and slick greens quickly underlined the challenge awaiting the field on the 7,440-yard, par-70 course on eastern Long Island.

World number one Scottie Scheffler, who is chasing a career Grand Slam, went out in the afternoon in difficult conditions. The American, a four-time major champion, can become only the seventh golfer to complete the Grand Slam if he wins on Sunday, which is also his 30th birthday. Scheffler played the back nine on Monday with Brian Harman, Marek Fleming and Chris Gotterup, and is due to play the front nine on Tuesday with Kim Si-woo, Sam Burns and Gary Woodland.

England’s Matt Fitzpatrick, the 2022 US Open champion, said the course demanded restraint as well as precision, especially on the greens and in the wind.
