Washington: Netflix is set to debut a new version of Little House on the Prairie on July 9, reviving Laura Ingalls Wilder’s well-known frontier story nearly five decades after it became a television mainstay.
The first season returns to Wilder’s semi-autobiographical books about life in the 19th-century American West. First published in the 1930s and later turned into the long-running television adaptation of the 1970s, the story is being presented again with a contemporary approach aimed at newer audiences.
The series centres on Laura Ingalls, played by Alice Halsey, as the Ingalls family tries to establish a new life in a frontier settlement near Independence. The drama depicts the family’s efforts to endure difficult prairie conditions, including illness, wild animals and destructive fires.
Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine said the project combines a close family narrative with a broader survival story. She said the emotional centre of the show is the Ingalls family’s bond as they remain together through hardship while hoping for a better future.
Sonnenshine also said the adaptation focuses on people who repeatedly remake their lives in search of meaning on the frontier.
While the story remains grounded in the experiences of the Ingalls family, the new version also widens its scope to include the Osage people, who had long lived on the land portrayed in the series. Cultural consultant Julie O’Keefe said this reflects an effort to present more than one side of the historical experience of westward expansion.
The cast includes Luke Bracey as Charles Ingalls, Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline Ingalls and Skywalker Hughes as Mary Ingalls, along with other actors playing settlers and Indigenous characters whose lives intersect on the prairie.
The series is intended to combine familiarity with a more layered reading of history. The creative team has also highlighted themes of resilience, identity and belonging. Executive producer Trip Friendly said the project carries forward a legacy linked to earlier adaptations, while Netflix executives have described it as part of the streamer’s broader lineup of comforting, family-focused dramas.
Interest in the series has been boosted by the enduring popularity of Wilder’s books, which have sold tens of millions of copies worldwide and have led to lasting screen adaptations. Netflix has already renewed the show for a second season before the first has aired, signalling confidence in its prospects. The next season is set to introduce characters from the original novels, including Laura’s rival Nellie Oleson.
