HOUSTON: Germany opened their FIFA World Cup campaign with a commanding 7-1 win over debutants Curacao in Group E on Sunday, pulling away comfortably after the Caribbean side briefly drew level in the first half.
Felix Nmecha put Germany ahead in the sixth minute with the fastest goal of the tournament so far, finishing after combining with Florian Wirtz. Curacao, the smallest nation ever to qualify for a World Cup, responded through Livano Comenencia, whose deflected effort beat Manuel Neuer to make it 1-1.
Germany quickly regained control before the interval. Nico Schlotterbeck restored the lead with a header, and Nmecha then won a penalty in first-half stoppage time that Kai Havertz converted. After the break, Jamal Musiala added another after holding off a defender, while Nathaniel Brown scored on his World Cup debut.
Deniz Undav and Havertz struck late to complete the rout, with Havertz finishing the match with two goals. Schlotterbeck, Musiala, Brown and Undav were also on the scoresheet as the four-time champions began their campaign with an emphatic victory in Houston.
