TEHRAN: The funeral of Iran’s former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is likely to take place toward the end of the current Iranian month of Khordad, which concludes on June 21, a Tehran local government official said on Tuesday.
Mohammad Ali Tavakolizadeh said the Revolutionary Guards are overseeing arrangements for the funeral. He said talks were continuing on whether to allow more time for preparations so the event could be organised more effectively.
Tavakolizadeh said three days had been set aside for the public to pay their respects. He added that the main ceremony in Tehran would continue for at least 24 hours.
He also said Khamenei’s body would be taken in a funeral procession to the holy city of Qom. According to Tavakolizadeh, the former supreme leader will then be buried in Mashhad at the shrine of Imam Reza, in line with his will.
