Faysal Quraishi and Shamoon Abbasi reunite for Punjabi film Mango Jatt

ISLAMABAD: Actors Faysal Quraishi and Shamoon Abbasi are set to appear together on screen again after nearly a decade in the upcoming Punjabi film Mango Jatt, directed by Abu Aleeha.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Abbasi said one of the main reasons he signed on to the project was the opportunity to work again with Quraishi, whom he described as a close friend. He said the role also appealed to him because it required him to perform in Punjabi, a language he said he was not fluent in, making it part of the challenge he looks for as an actor.

Abbasi said he plays the antagonist in the film and described the character as someone constantly in pursuit, which adds action-led tension to the story. He also praised the title of the film, saying it matched the light, humorous spirit of the project. Referring to his working relationship with Quraishi, he said their off-screen friendship made collaboration easier and free of rivalry.

He said:

Taking challenging roles has always been my strength.

Abbasi added:

We are friends off-screen and there are never insecurities between us. That comfort reflects in our work.

Director outlines family-oriented tone

The film also stars Hareem Farooq in a key part, while Hassan Murad, Qaiser Piya and others are part of the wider cast. Abu Aleeha said the production combines romance, comedy and family-friendly storytelling, and is expected to be released later this year.

The director said the teaser may have given a different impression, but stressed that the film is not built as an action-heavy title. He described Mango Jatt as a commercial Punjabi film designed for family audiences, with a warm and simple tone rather than a stylised action treatment.

Abu Aleeha said:

A romantic comedy with strong family appeal.

He further said:

The teaser's tone does not reflect the film's actual genre.

He described the film as:

a beautiful romantic comedy and a children's film

He added:

This is not a stylised action film as it may look in parts. When you watch it, you will see it is a simple, warm romantic comedy.

Punjab setting and supporting cast

Abu Aleeha said the film places strong emphasis on Punjab’s culture and landscape, including scenes filmed in locations such as Nankana, which he said have been presented in a fresh way. He said the story includes small but distinctive elements drawn from Punjab, along with comedy and family-centred themes.

According to the director, several child characters play an important role in the narrative. He also said the film marks his first full-scale commercial venture and described it as a project with strong music and visuals aimed at mainstream audiences.

Abu Aleeha said the film is:

Paisa Wasool

He also confirmed that Ayesha Jahanzeb will make her debut in the film alongside a large supporting cast.
