NEW DELHI: At least 21 people were killed in a fire at a hotel in India’s capital on Wednesday, police said, in one of the deadliest such incidents seen in the city in recent years.

The hotel was in Malviya Nagar in south Delhi, an area described by police as largely residential and popular with students and young professionals. Police said at least 40 people had been rescued so far.

Television footage showed flames and heavy smoke pouring from the building, with the exterior visibly charred as residents gathered in a narrow nearby lane. The footage also showed two people jumping from an upper floor of the building.

Local administration official Jitendra Kumar told reporters the blaze was likely linked to a restaurant on the ground floor of the building.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the deaths as tragic, offered condolences to the families of those killed, and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
