Israel launches strikes in south Lebanon after evacuation warnings

BEIRUT: Israel carried out strikes across southern Lebanon on Saturday after ordering evacuations from more than a dozen locations.
The strikes came a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli forces had moved deeper into Lebanese territory. Lebanon’s army said a targeted Israeli strike in the south wounded two soldiers, a day after military delegations from Lebanon and Israel held security talks in Washington.
According to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency, Israeli strikes hit several southern areas, including artillery fire near the medieval-era Beaufort castle. The Washington talks preceded US-brokered negotiations expected early next week, which would be the fourth round since the latest conflict between Israel and Hezbollah began.
Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam accused Israel of pursuing a scorched-earth policy in the country’s south and called for the fighting to stop. Salam issued the warning a day after Netanyahu said Israeli forces had advanced further into Lebanon.
