Britain records hottest May day as temperature reaches 34.8C
Britain logged its hottest May day on record on Monday after temperatures hit 34.8C at Kew Gardens in west London. The Met Office said the previous record of 32.8C had stood since 1922 and 1944.

LONDON: Britain recorded its hottest day ever for May on Monday, with temperatures climbing close to 35 degrees Celsius, the Met Office said.
The national weather service said the temperature reached 34.8C at Kew Gardens in west London, provisionally surpassing the previous UK May record of 32.8C. That earlier high had been recorded in both 1922 and 1944.
The Met Office also said Monday set a new record for a public holiday. It added that a study published last year found the likelihood of exceeding the previous 32.8C May record had become three times higher because of climate change driven by human greenhouse gas emissions.
In a statement, the Met Office said: "This heat would be exceptional in the UK even in mid summer, let alone in May."
