LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Thursday said the province is well-stocked with wheat reserves, as a record production of more than 22 million metric tonnes has been achieved this year, while directing the establishment of an AI-based advanced live dashboard to “safeguard every grain of wheat.”
Chairing a high-level meeting on wheat, agriculture, food safety and consumer protection, the chief minister said, “Alhamdulillah, Punjab has sufficient wheat stocks and has recorded a bumper wheat crop of more than 22 million metric tonnes this year.”
The meeting decided to establish an AI-based advanced live dashboard aimed at ensuring real-time monitoring and protection of wheat stocks across the province.
Officials briefed the chief minister that the proposed live dashboard would play a key role in evidence-based and foolproof food policy-making by tracking wheat demand, supply, stock levels and price control mechanisms. The system, it was informed, would also enable day-to-day as well as real-time digital monitoring of wheat stocks and the entire supply chain across Punjab.
The meeting approved allowing licensed aggregators and stockists to legally store wheat across the province, while it was also decided that all such licensed entities would be bound to declare their wheat stocks.
The chief minister directed authorities to initiate strict legal action under the Anti-Hoarding Act against those failing to declare wheat stocks within two weeks. The meeting also indicated that incentives may be offered to aggregators who transparently declare their wheat reserves.
During the meeting, key decisions were taken regarding agriculture, food safety, wheat availability and price stability. The chief minister was given a detailed briefing on ongoing measures related to wheat management, agriculture and consumer protection.
Maryam Nawaz directed officials to provide maximum facilitation and ease of doing business to farmers, aggregators, millers and major stockists. She also ordered a complete overhaul and revamping of the Food Department in line with modern governance requirements.
She further instructed authorities to keep “roti and naan prices” under strict control and ensure the availability of affordable flour for the public. The chief minister emphasized that the advanced live dashboard should be made operational at the earliest to ensure complete protection and transparent monitoring of wheat stocks across the province.
