PTA warns WhatsApp accounts may be blocked
PTA has warned that WhatsApp accounts linked to inactive or unregistered SIMs may become inaccessible if users do not update their details. The regulator also announced a nationwide ban on SIM card sales from midnight to 6am.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Tuesday cautioned WhatsApp users that accounts connected to inactive or unregistered SIM cards could become inaccessible if account details are not updated.
In an advisory posted on X, the telecom regulator said users should make sure their WhatsApp accounts remain linked to an active SIM that is properly registered. The authority said the step was necessary to avoid disruption in access to the messaging service for affected users.
PTA also urged users to take responsibility for maintaining accurate account information tied to their mobile connections. "Your digital identity is your responsibility," it emphasised.
Advisory on SIM registration
According to the advisory, the warning applies to WhatsApp accounts associated with SIMs that are either no longer active or are not registered in line with the required procedures. PTA said users should update their details to ensure continued access.
The regulator’s message focused on the link between mobile number registration and digital account access, highlighting the need for users to verify that the SIM attached to their WhatsApp account remains valid and active.
Night-time ban on SIM card sales
Separately, the authority has imposed a restriction on the sale of SIM cards across the country during late-night hours. Under the measure, SIM sales will remain banned from midnight until 6am.
PTA said the restriction is aimed at curbing the issuance of illegal SIMs and further strengthening the security system. The move forms part of the regulator’s broader effort to tighten oversight of mobile connections and prevent misuse of unregistered or unlawfully issued SIM cards.
The latest advisory and the time-based sales restriction were announced as part of PTA’s ongoing regulatory measures concerning SIM registration and digital security. The authority’s statement specifically linked proper SIM registration with the continued accessibility of WhatsApp accounts and stressed compliance with registration requirements.
Users who rely on WhatsApp through mobile numbers attached to inactive or unregistered SIMs have been advised to review their account status and ensure their numbers meet the regulator’s requirements.
