Mohammad Amir’s British citizenship could open path to IPL

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has reportedly secured British citizenship, a development that could make him eligible to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The matter surfaced after Amir reposted an Instagram update referring to the approval of his British citizenship. The left-arm pacer had previously indicated that an IPL appearance could become possible once he met the eligibility requirements.

Amir, 34, had spoken last year about the possibility of taking part in the IPL as a British citizen. He obtained UK citizenship after marrying British national Narjis Khan.

Previous remarks on IPL prospects

During an appearance on Geo News programme Haarna Mana Hai last year, Amir said he expected to become eligible for the IPL soon and would be open to participating if the opportunity arose.

He said, "By next year, I will have the opportunity to play in the IPL, and if given the chance, then why not? I will play in the IPL."

Amir had also said he would prefer to join Royal Challengers Bengaluru if picked. During the same discussion, former Pakistan batter Ahmed Shehzad said the franchise could benefit from Amir’s experience, particularly in its bowling resources.

Pakistan commitment and franchise options

Amir is part of the Pakistan side that won the 2009 T20 World Cup and the 2017 Champions Trophy. He has previously said that despite being eligible, he would not play for England and remained committed to Pakistan, while keeping franchise cricket options open.

The report noted that Pakistani cricketers have not featured in the IPL since 2008 because of strained political ties between Pakistan and India.

Historical context

Former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood is the only Pakistan-born cricketer to have played in the IPL while holding British citizenship.

If Amir is considered by an IPL franchise, his British citizenship could place him in a position different from Pakistan-based players who have remained absent from the tournament for years.
