West Ham edge closer to relegation as Fernandes matches Premier League assist record

LONDON: West Ham moved to the brink of relegation from the Premier League after a 3-1 loss at Newcastle on Sunday, while Bruno Fernandes equalled the competition's single-season assist record as Manchester United beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 to secure third place.

The result at St James' Park left Tottenham needing only one more point in realistic terms to stay up. Spurs can guarantee survival with a win at Chelsea on Tuesday, while a draw would also be likely to be enough because of their far better goal difference than West Ham.

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo said his side had fallen well short in a match they could not afford to lose.

"Overall bad performance. Too many things (went wrong), I think we gifted them the goals," said West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo. "We realise the situation is extremely difficult for us."

West Ham well beaten at Newcastle

A third straight defeat left West Ham relying on other results, and Newcastle, despite having little at stake, were comfortably the better side.

Nick Woltemade opened the scoring by converting Harvey Barnes' cross, registering his first league goal since December. Newcastle doubled their advantage inside the opening 20 minutes when William Osula finished off a slick attacking move.

Osula struck again to make it 3-0, continuing a strong run that has brought him five goals in six games. Taty Castellanos pulled one back for the visitors with a fine effort, but it did little to alter the outcome.

According to the reported permutations, West Ham can only stay up if they defeat Leeds on the final day and Tottenham then lose both of their remaining matches, against Chelsea and Everton.

Fernandes reaches landmark as United seal third

At Old Trafford, Fernandes joined Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne as the only players to record 20 assists in a Premier League season. His cross for Bryan Mbeumo late in the game brought him level with the long-standing mark and helped Manchester United confirm a third-place finish.

United made a fast start and went ahead after five minutes through Luke Shaw, who volleyed home. Nottingham Forest responded early in the second half when Elliot Anderson's delivery was headed in by Morato to level the match.

The home side restored their lead almost immediately. Matheus Cunha found the net and the goal stood after a VAR review checked for a possible handball by Mbeumo in the build-up.

Fernandes then produced the cross that led to United's third goal, with Mbeumo turning it in for his first goal since February. Forest reduced the margin in the 78th minute through Morgan Gibbs-White, but United held on to take the points.

The day therefore brought sharply contrasting outcomes at opposite ends of the table, with West Ham's survival hopes fading further and Manchester United finishing the weekend with a top-three place confirmed and their captain level with one of the Premier League's most notable creative records.
