WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump posted a stream of conspiracy theories, memes and attacks on political opponents on his Truth Social platform into the early hours of Tuesday, according to a report published by AFP.
The late-night activity came as public attention intensified over the 79-year-old Republican’s health. It also unfolded while Trump was dealing with an economically damaging standoff with Iran and preparing to leave later on Tuesday for a summit in China.
During a roughly three-hour period around midnight on Monday, Trump made more than 50 posts. The vast majority were re-shares of videos and screenshots from supporter accounts, along with AI-generated memes.
Several of the posts targeted former president Barack Obama. Two of them described Obama as a traitor and a DEMONIC FORCE. Other posts called for Obama and additional Trump critics to be arrested.
A number of posts pressing for prosecutions tagged Todd Blanche, Trump’s former criminal defence lawyer, who has been appointed acting US attorney general and is reportedly working to speed up prosecutions involving Trump critics.
Posts repeated false 2020 election claims
Many of the messages repeated Trump’s long-running false assertion that the 2020 presidential election had been stolen from him. These included fabricated claims that voting machine companies shifted ballots cast for Trump to Joe Biden, who won the election.
"The CIA knew what these machines were capable of and brushed it under the rug to control election outcomes," read one post shared on Trump’s account.
The posting spree also included at least two original messages carrying the signature President DJT. One of them said cryptically that the United States was going to talk with Cuba. Another, running to more than 400 words, defended Trump’s expensive renovation project at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
the episode as an extraordinary outpouring on social media, with Trump’s focus appearing fixed on online messaging during a period when he was also facing scrutiny over his health and major foreign policy and economic issues.
No further details were provided in the report about the planned summit in China or the standoff with Iran beyond noting that both formed part of the backdrop to Trump’s overnight posting activity.
