Guardiola says players must improve to avoid VAR controversies

LONDON: Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said teams need to raise their own level if they want to stay clear of contentious VAR decisions, arguing that players can reduce the impact of replay calls by performing better.

Guardiola said his side had previously suffered from decisions made by officials and video review, and said he remained frustrated by calls that went against City in their FA Cup final defeats in 2024 and 2025.

VAR again came under scrutiny after West Ham, who are battling relegation, had a stoppage-time equaliser ruled out against Arsenal following a lengthy review last Sunday. Arsenal's 1-0 victory left the Premier League leaders five points ahead of second-placed City.

Despite that latest controversy, Guardiola said the focus should remain on what teams can control on the pitch.
