RAWALPINDI: A civilian was martyred on Monday after intercepting and attempting to stop a suspected suicide bomber near the inter-provincial border area of Jand and Khushal Garh Bridge in Kohat, preventing what officials described as a potentially major terrorist attack.

According to security sources, a suspected militant was moving through agricultural fields in the area when he was confronted by a local resident, identified as Liaquat, a retired employee of Pakistan Railways and resident of Village Mankoor, Tehsil Jand, District Attock.

Officials said Liaquat stopped the suspicious individual and questioned him near the border zone. In a state of panic, the attacker detonated his explosives, resulting in a powerful blast.

Liaquat embraced martyrdom on the spot, while the attacker was killed in the explosion, according to initial reports.

Security sources believe the suspect was attempting to reach a sensitive checkpoint in the inter-provincial border region, which could have caused significant casualties had he not been intercepted.

Authorities credited the deceased civilian’s timely intervention for preventing a major tragedy, saying his action likely saved the lives of personnel stationed at nearby security posts as well as civilians in the surrounding area.

Officials described his sacrifice as a “wall of protection” that stopped the attacker from reaching a high-risk target location.

Security sources said the incident reflects ongoing attempts by militant elements to infiltrate sensitive areas and target both civilians and security installations in border regions.

Without providing independent verification of affiliations, officials said such groups continue to exploit difficult terrain and porous boundaries in the region.

They added that security forces remain vigilant and are conducting follow-up operations in the area to clear any possible threats.

The martyrdom of Liaquat has been widely acknowledged in official circles, with tributes highlighting his courage and sense of civic responsibility.

Authorities said individuals like him represent the resilience of ordinary citizens who stand alongside law enforcement agencies in the fight against militancy.

The incident has once again underscored the risks faced by civilians in conflict-affected border regions and the continued importance of coordinated security efforts to prevent such attacks.
