Punjab govt tried promoting overseas jobs — then Hitler Iqbal entered the chat

A promotional video released for the Punjab government’s Taabeer Program has unexpectedly gone viral online after viewers became fixated on the name of one of its featured participants: Hitler Iqbal.

The clip, intended to highlight opportunities under the government’s overseas employment initiative, features a resident of Wazirabad introducing himself while discussing his experience with the programme. However, social media users quickly shifted attention away from the actual campaign and toward the participant’s unusual name, sparking memes, jokes, and disbelief across platforms.

In the video, Hitler Iqbal explains that he appeared for an overseas job interview carrying only his passport and CV, adding that the process was entirely free. He presents the initiative as a useful opportunity for young Pakistanis hoping to secure employment abroad.

The internet, however, had other priorities.

Users flooded comment sections with reactions ranging from confusion to dark humour, with many saying they had to replay the video just to confirm they had heard the name correctly. Others joked that the campaign’s entire marketing budget had now been overtaken by “one unforgettable introduction.”

"He will get a job in Germany easily," one comment read. "Khwaja asif selecting candidates," another read.

The Taabeer Program itself is part of the Punjab government’s Skilled Punjab initiative launched under the provincial administration to help young people access overseas employment opportunities.

According to officials, the programme offers free technical training, international certifications, and short-term skill development courses designed to prepare candidates for foreign job markets, particularly in Gulf countries. Training durations reportedly range from two weeks to three months depending on the field.

Authorities say the broader goal is to reduce unemployment and increase overseas remittances by helping skilled workers connect with international employers.

But online, the policy discussion was largely drowned out by reactions to a man named Hitler Iqbal becoming the internet’s newest unexpected viral character.
