Karachi Bar Association elections postponed after rigging allegations

KARACHI: The annual elections of the Karachi Bar Association have been postponed indefinitely after allegations of ballot tampering surfaced during polling, according to an official circular issued by Election Commissioner Abdul Sattar Loharani.

In the circular, Loharani said the decision was taken because of unfavourable conditions at polling stations. He also warned that those found responsible for mismanagement would be investigated in accordance with the law.

The move came after serious complaints emerged during the voting process, including reports that pre-signed and pre-marked ballot papers had been recovered at polling stations. The development prompted strong reaction from members of the legal fraternity, with several senior lawyers describing it as one of the most serious setbacks in the bar's history.

Lawyers raise concerns over ballot papers

Senior lawyer Mahmood-ul-Hasan, a former multiple-term office bearer of the bar, said the standing of the legal profession had been damaged by the episode. He said the reported recovery of pre-signed ballot papers was unprecedented and deeply troubling.

Other lawyers, including Muhammad Faheem Zia Advocate and Naveed Amin Advocate, also alleged that hundreds of pre-marked ballot papers were found at polling stations. They called for the adoption of electronic voting in future elections to improve transparency.

The cancellation has intensified criticism of the bar's electoral management and governance. Members of the legal community said urgent corrective steps were needed to restore confidence in the process and protect the credibility of the institution.

Calls for inquiry and reforms

Senior members of the legal fraternity called for a judicial inquiry into the incident. They said the controversy had exposed serious weaknesses in the conduct of the election and underscored the need for structural reforms.

Lawyers advocating reform also urged the introduction of electronic voting, arguing that it could help ensure greater transparency in future bar elections. The demand gained traction after allegations that ballot papers had been tampered with during the polling process.

The latest postponement is another disruption in the Karachi Bar Association's recent electoral history. This is the fourth time in five months that the election process has been put off, an unusual pattern that has added to concerns over transparency and internal governance.

The indefinite postponement has left the legal community calling for immediate reforms aimed at rebuilding trust in the electoral system. Lawyers said the credibility of one of the country's most influential legal bodies must be safeguarded through a transparent and accountable process.
