Erica Robin backs women’s rights amid Aurat March controversy

KARACHI: Model Erica Robin has voiced support for women’s rights and freedom of expression as debate continues over Aurat March activities and the recent detention of activists in Karachi.

In a series of posts on Instagram, Robin called on people to speak out against injustice, abuse and unequal treatment, saying that silence only helps harmful behaviour become normalised. She said the issue was not a lack of awareness, but rather the realities that women still face.

Robin also addressed criticism directed at women who speak openly about discrimination and harmful social attitudes. She said public discussion of such issues should not be seen as incompatible with work in fashion and entertainment.

She urged celebrities and other public figures to use their platforms to raise awareness.

Remarks follow Karachi activists’ detention

Her comments came days after controversy over the brief detention of Aurat March activists outside the Karachi Press Club, including veteran rights campaigner Sheema Kermani. The activists had gathered to announce the Aurat March event planned for May 10 at Sea View in Karachi in connection with Mother’s Day.

Organisers had announced that this year’s Karachi demonstration would be held under the theme Good Girls.

In a video message, Robin reacted to what she described as disturbing developments, including reports that Aurat March organisers had still not received a no-objection certificate for the planned May 10 demonstration.

She also said she found it troubling that, instead of showing solidarity, some women were seen dragging other women down. She described that as a very shameful act and said such behaviour reflected a wider lack of respect for women in society.

Robin further said it was shameful that people in the country still found it difficult to breathe freely or speak openly.

She said remaining quiet had not helped and would not help in the future.

Her intervention has added a celebrity voice to the discussion surrounding women’s rights, public expression and the treatment of activists linked to the Aurat March in Karachi.
