China, US must pursue stable and constructive relations: Wang Yi

BEIJING: Wang Yi on Thursday said that China is willing to work with the United States to faithfully implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state in order to stabilise and improve bilateral relations for the benefit of both countries and the wider international community.

Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during a meeting in Beijing with a visiting bipartisan delegation of US senators led by Steve Daines.

Describing the visit as the first bipartisan delegation of US senators to visit China since Donald Trump returned to office, Wang said the trip carried important symbolic significance and offered an opportunity to strengthen dialogue and mutual understanding.

He expressed hope that the delegation would witness China’s new development momentum firsthand, build fresh channels of communication, and explore new areas of cooperation to inject positive momentum into the stable, sound and sustainable development of China-US relations.

Wang stressed that ties between China and the US affect not only the well-being of their peoples but also global peace and stability. He reiterated that China’s policy toward the US remains consistent and clear, emphasising mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation as the guiding principles for relations between the two major powers.

Referring to multiple phone conversations and meetings between the leaders of both countries over the past year, Wang said head-of-state diplomacy had played a crucial role in steering bilateral relations during critical moments and setting the overall direction of engagement.

He added that China stands ready to work with the US to implement the understandings reached by the two leaders and place bilateral relations on a more stable and constructive trajectory.

The Chinese foreign minister further emphasised that properly managing perceptions is essential to ensuring healthy relations between the two countries. Although China and the US have different political systems and development models, Wang said both are rooted in their own historical and cultural traditions and reflect the choices of their respective peoples.

Invoking the concept of “harmony without uniformity,” Wang said the two countries should seek partnership rather than rivalry. He reaffirmed that China would continue to pursue peaceful development and would never follow a path of hegemony as its national strength grows.

Wang also called on Washington to view China objectively, understand its development rationally, respect its core interests, and manage differences appropriately, while jointly expanding cooperation in areas beneficial to both countries and the wider world.

According to Chinese state media, including Xinhua News Agency, members of the US delegation shared their views on China-US relations and exchanged opinions with the Chinese side on a range of international and regional issues of common concern.

Chinese analysts have viewed the visit as another sign of efforts by both sides to maintain strategic communication despite ongoing differences over trade, technology and geopolitical issues, with Beijing consistently advocating dialogue and cooperation over confrontation.
