Usman Tariq joins Warwickshire for 2026 Vitality Blast

LONDON: Pakistan mystery spinner Usman Tariq has signed with Warwickshire Bears for the 2026 Vitality T20 Blast, the club announced on Tuesday.

According to a statement issued by Warwickshire, the 30-year-old spinner had opportunities to feature in franchise competitions in different parts of the world, but the county side secured his services for the tournament, which is scheduled to begin on May 22.

The move means Tariq is set to spend much of the English summer at Edgbaston. His first appearance in the Vitality Blast will be followed by a stint in The Hundred with Birmingham Phoenix, who picked him up for £140,000 in the players' draft held in March.

Reacting to the signing, Tariq said he was pleased to be joining the Bears and was looking forward to linking up with the squad.

He said: I am very excited to bring more fun and energy to the Bears. I can't wait to get involved with the squad, and it's a great feeling to be part of this team. I hope to see as many people as possible at Edgbaston this summer.

Warwickshire Performance Director James Thomas said the club viewed Tariq as the kind of player it wanted to add for the competition and welcomed the completion of the deal.

Thomas said: Usman is exactly the type of high-impact player we want to bring into Warwickshire, so we're delighted to get this deal completed.

He added that the spinner's range of skills and understanding of the game made him a serious option in white-ball cricket, while also highlighting his competitive drive and desire to improve.

Thomas said: His skill set and tactical awareness make him a genuine threat in modern white-ball cricket, but it's his hunger to compete and continually improve that really stands out.

The Warwickshire official also pointed to what he described as a close link between the county club and Birmingham Phoenix, saying Tariq's involvement in the Blast before moving into The Hundred reflected that structure.

Thomas said: What makes this signing particularly exciting is the alignment between Warwickshire and Birmingham Phoenix. Bringing Usman into the Bears for the Vitality Blast, before transitioning into The Hundred with the Phoenix, reflects the strength of our integrated model across club and franchise.

He further said the arrangement would provide continuity for the player, help maximise his impact in both competitions and strengthen ties with supporters in Birmingham and Warwickshire.

Thomas said: It allows us to create continuity for the player, maximise performance impact across both competitions, and build stronger connections with our supporters in Birmingham and Warwickshire. Ultimately, this is about strengthening the team, the franchise, and our presence in the area, and we believe Usman can play a key role in that this summer.

Summer schedule in England

Tariq's signing places him in line for a full summer in England across two major short-format competitions. Warwickshire will have him available for the Vitality Blast, while Birmingham Phoenix are set to use him in The Hundred after selecting him earlier this year.

The announcement underlines Warwickshire's plans ahead of the 2026 Blast and adds a Pakistan spinner to their squad for the domestic T20 campaign.
