Three transpersons arrested over elderly man’s torture in Vehari

BAHAWALPUR: Police in Vehari district said they had arrested three transpersons after a video circulating on social media showed an elderly physically challenged man being tortured and humiliated.

According to district police, District Police Officer Tasawar Iqbal took notice of the video clip, which allegedly showed three transpersons blackening the face of the elderly disabled man and subjecting him to abuse. The DPO then directed the relevant police station to register a case and arrest those involved.

Following those instructions, Model Town police in Burewala, led by Station House Officer Mahar Qaisar Manzoor, detained the three suspects identified as Mohsin, Minahal and Usman after a case was registered against them.

Police said the victim, identified as Ghazanfar Shoaib, had been working as a house help for the suspects. They said he was allegedly tortured and humiliated on suspicion of theft.

The arrests were made after the video of the incident went viral, prompting police action in the district.

Police claim gang involved in 13 robbery cases busted

In a separate development, Burewala city police said they had dismantled a gang of robbers and arrested its alleged ringleader along with two other members.

Police identified the suspects as gang leader Azmat and his alleged accomplices Naveed and Muneab. According to police, the group was involved in 13 cases related to the snatching of mobile phones and motorcycles.

Police said they recovered nine snatched motorcycles, a rickshaw, mobile phones and other valuables from the suspects’ possession.

The two developments were reported by police in Vehari district, where authorities said action had been taken in both cases.

Police have presented the arrests in the torture case as a response to the viral video, while the separate operation against the robbery suspects was described as a successful action by Burewala city police against a gang allegedly linked to repeated street crime incidents.
