Korean festival in Islamabad cut short

ISLAMABAD: The 2026 K-Wave Festa organised by the Korean Embassy in Islamabad was ended early after overcrowding and bad weather disrupted the event, leaving many visitors unable to enter.

The annual festival is held to showcase Korean culture in Islamabad, including cuisine, arts and music. It is particularly known for K-beauty masterclasses and K-pop performances, which draw strong interest from fans of South Korean popular culture in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

The embassy had increased public interest in this year’s event through social media promotion, with influencers encouraging their followers to attend. The festival was held at a private hotel in Islamabad and had already been postponed once because of the US-Iran peace talks, adding to expectations around its return.

However, the arrangements were made for a limited number of attendees, while thousands of young men and women as well as families arrived at the venue. As the crowd grew, the event became overcrowded and organisers shut it down before its scheduled conclusion.

Many visitors, including students, young attendees and families, were left outside the entrance and had to return without attending the programme. The large turnout also affected traffic in the area.

Traffic disruption and public reaction

With crowds gathering and traffic building up on roads leading towards the sensitive Red Zone, the Islamabad administration intervened and closed roads leading to the private hotel, disrupting the traffic system.

People later turned to social media to voice frustration over the arrangements. Many said they had waited in queues and in the parking area in the afternoon heat, only to be refused entry.

The comment was made by a young influencer who, has 7,000 followers on Instagram. Hundreds of others expressed similar disappointment online.

Embassy response

In comments to The Express Tribune, a spokesperson for the Korean Embassy said the affection shown by attendees for the Korean Festival could not be described in words and added that the event would be organised in a better way in the future.

The festival has become a regular cultural fixture in Islamabad, with its K-pop performances and beauty-related sessions among the most anticipated parts of the programme each year. This year’s edition, however, ended with many attendees unable to take part after the unexpectedly large turnout exceeded the venue’s capacity.
