TEHRAN: Iranian strikes and attacks by allied groups damaged at least 16 United States military sites in eight countries across the Middle East during the latest conflict, according to a CNN investigation cited in a report published on Friday.
The findings were based on dozens of satellite images as well as interviews with sources from the United States and Gulf Arab countries. The affected facilities represented the majority of US military positions in the region, with some locations described as being left virtually unusable.
Satellite imagery indicated that key targets included advanced radar systems, communications infrastructure and aircraft. Many of these assets are costly and not easy to replace.
There has been a spectrum of assessments.
one source said.
From a pretty dramatic side, of the whole facility is destroyed and needs to be shut down, to leaders who say these things are worth repairing due to the strategic benefit they give the US.
The same source said the strikes appeared to focus on assets that could inflict significant operational and financial costs.
It’s notable they really identified those facilities as the most cost-effective targets to hit.
the source said.
Our radar systems [are] our most expensive and our most limited resources in the region.
Cost of the conflict
On Wednesday, Pentagon comptroller Jules “Jay” Hurst III told lawmakers that the war in Iran had so far cost the United States about $25 billion. However, a source later told CNN that the real figure was likely closer to $40 billion to $50 billion.
The conflict is currently paused, while efforts are continuing to secure a permanent end to the fighting.
Trump comments on negotiations
US President Donald Trump said on Friday that Iran was not meeting Washington’s expectations in talks over a possible agreement.
Iran isn’t coming through with the kind of deal that we have to have.
The latest account adds to the picture of the scale of damage caused during the confrontation, with the report saying the strikes hit a broad range of US facilities spread across the region. The damage assessment varied from site to site, with some installations seen as requiring shutdown and others viewed by officials as worth restoring because of their strategic value.
The investigation relied on satellite imagery and interviews with sources from both the US and Gulf Arab states to assess the extent of the damage. It described the affected sites as making up the majority of American military positions in the Middle East during the conflict.
