Scott Parker leaves Burnley after Premier League relegation

London: Scott Parker has left Burnley by mutual consent after the club’s relegation from the Premier League, the club announced on Thursday.

Burnley said in a statement that Parker and the board had “mutually agreed that his time at Turf Moor would conclude” after one season back in the top flight of English football.

Parker had guided Burnley to promotion last year, but the club struggled in the Premier League this season and managed only four league wins. Burnley’s relegation was confirmed on April 22 following a 1-0 home defeat to Manchester City, two days after Wolves were relegated.

The 45-year-old, who has previously managed Fulham, Bournemouth and Belgian side Club Brugge, joined Burnley in July 2024 on a three-year contract after succeeding Vincent Kompany.

His first season in charge brought an immediate return to the Premier League. Burnley said he oversaw a standout 2024/25 Championship campaign that featured a 31-match unbeaten run and 30 clean sheets, with the club securing promotion at the first attempt.

That momentum did not continue in the Premier League. Burnley have conceded 68 goals in 34 league matches this season, the highest total in the division. The club were also eliminated from both the FA Cup and the League Cup by third-tier opposition.

In its statement, Burnley said, “The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Scott for his professionalism, dedication and contribution. He leaves with the respect and gratitude of everyone connected with Burnley Football Club.”

Parker also issued a statement on the club’s website, saying it had been an “immense privilege” to lead Burnley. He said, “I have enjoyed every moment of our journey together, but feel that now is the right time for both parties to move in a different direction. I reflect back with great pride on what we achieved during my time at the club, especially our unforgettable promotion season in 2024/25, and it was a true honour to lead this team into the Premier League.”

Interim arrangements and next steps

Burnley said Parker’s assistant, Mike Jackson, will take charge of the team for the club’s four remaining Premier League matches, starting with Friday’s fixture at Leeds United.

The club also said the process of appointing a new permanent head coach ahead of the 2026/27 season has already begun.

Parker’s departure brings an end to a short spell at Turf Moor in which he delivered promotion but was unable to keep Burnley in the Premier League.
