Leishmaniasis cases reach 255 in South Waziristan as health officials step up response

Health authorities have reported around 255 cases of leishmaniasis in Lower South Waziristan, raising concerns over the spread of the disease in remote areas.

District Health Officer Dr Adnan said the department is monitoring the situation and providing treatment facilities in affected locations. He said essential medicines, including Glucantime injections, are available at the district health office and District Headquarters Hospital in Wana.

He stressed the need for awareness campaigns to inform residents about preventive measures and limit further transmission.

Residents of Azam Warsak and Shaheen Panga in Birmal tehsil said the number of cases is rising, particularly among children, creating concern among families.

They said access to healthcare remains limited in rural areas, with many patients facing difficulties reaching hospitals, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment.

Locals have urged the government to improve healthcare access and ensure availability of medical facilities in affected regions.
