Pakistan, Sri Lanka launch 'Shake Hands-II' joint counterterrorism exercise

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan and Sri Lanka have commenced the second edition of their joint counterterrorism exercise, “Shake Hands-II,” aimed at enhancing operational coordination and strengthening military ties.

The two-week exercise began on April 27, 2026, at Tarbela, with participation from the Pakistan Army’s elite Special Services Group and Special Forces of the Sri Lankan Army.

The exercise is designed to boost professional capabilities through joint training, focusing on counterterrorism operations and tactical coordination. Officials said the initiative reflects the growing defence cooperation between the two friendly countries and underscores their shared commitment to combating terrorism.

Participating troops are expected to benefit from the exchange of operational experiences and best practices, enhancing interoperability and mutual understanding between the two forces.

Defence analysts view “Shake Hands-II” as part of broader efforts to deepen military-to-military relations, while also improving readiness to respond to evolving security challenges in the region.
