SHYMKENT: Pakistan’s under-16 boys’ team began its UEFA Under-16 Development Tournament campaign with a 4-1 defeat to hosts Kazakhstan at the BIIK Sports Complex on Saturday, in what was the first time a Pakistan side has featured in a UEFA competition.

Kazakhstan took control early and built a four-goal lead before the interval. The home side went ahead in the seventh minute when Platon Shipstin converted a penalty. Anuar Tolendi then added a second in the 21st minute on a counter-attack, while captain David Zarechnyy made it 3-0 in the 30th minute after a defensive mistake. Daniyar Kassi scored the fourth with a header in first-half injury time.

Pakistan showed improvement after the break and delivered a more energetic second-half display. Captain Abdul Samad reduced the deficit with a powerful header after meeting a precise cross from Muhammad Hanzala on the right. Pakistan also created further openings, with substitute Danish Masih coming close on two occasions.

Improved second-half response

The match represented a landmark occasion for Pakistan youth football, with the team making the country’s first appearance in a UEFA competition. Although the side struggled in the opening half, it responded with a better showing after the restart.

Head coach Mohammed Essa said the outing would serve as an important lesson for the players. In a statement released by the Pakistan Football Federation, he said, “This is a learning experience for the team since it is the first time that a Pakistan side is playing in a UEFA competition. It was the first game for the team here and I think we did well after a tough first half.”

Pakistan captain Abdul Samad also reflected on the result while looking ahead to the next fixture. He said, “It wasn’t the result that we wanted. But we will take our learnings from this match and come out stronger and better in the second match.”

Pakistan will now turn their attention to their second match of the tournament, where they are scheduled to face Russia on Monday.

The opening defeat came after Kazakhstan’s strong first-half performance put the visitors under sustained pressure, but Pakistan’s response after the interval offered some encouragement as they sought to settle into the competition.
