Pakistan turns to UN CFS for policy support on food security reforms

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has initiated dialogue with the United Nations Committee on World Food Security (CFS) to seek policy guidance for strengthening its national food security strategies, officials said on Saturday.

The development took place during a meeting between Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain and CFS Chairperson Anas Al-Nabulsi on the sidelines of the FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific in Brunei Darussalam.

The ministry said Pakistan is working to improve access to food for its population of more than 215 million while addressing environmental and socio-economic pressures affecting agricultural systems.

Mr Hussain highlighted Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to ensure food availability and said the country is actively engaging in global initiatives to combat food insecurity and malnutrition. He stressed the importance of aligning international policy recommendations with domestic needs.

The CFS chair underscored the need for inclusive governance, stronger cross-sector coordination and evidence-based policymaking to drive food system transformation. He also emphasised increased access to sustainable financing and better integration of research into policy decisions.

Both sides agreed on the importance of strengthening implementation of CFS policy recommendations at the national level. Pakistan was also invited to participate in ongoing global policy development on resilient food systems.

The discussions highlighted the role of research institutions and universities in advancing agricultural innovation, including precision farming and digital technologies aimed at improving productivity and resilience.

The meeting also reviewed upcoming CFS initiatives, including forums on artificial intelligence, digitalisation and data in food systems.

Officials said the engagement reflects a broader effort to combine international expertise with local priorities to address long-term food security challenges.
