ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Friday held a detailed telephonic conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, focusing on bilateral relations, regional developments, and the rescheduling of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s postponed visit to Russia.
The high-level contact comes against the backdrop of shifting geopolitical dynamics, particularly following the recent escalation in the Middle East triggered by strikes involving the United States and Israel against Iran. The situation had prompted Islamabad to defer the prime minister’s official visit, which, according to earlier reports, was scheduled for March 3 to 5.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pakistan, both leaders reaffirmed the importance of maintaining regular high-level exchanges to sustain momentum in Pakistan-Russia relations. They agreed to work towards identifying new dates for Prime Minister Shehbaz’s visit at a mutually convenient time, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening diplomatic engagement.
During the conversation, Dar and Lavrov also reviewed the broader trajectory of bilateral ties, which have witnessed gradual expansion in recent years across areas such as energy cooperation, trade, regional connectivity and multilateral coordination. Both sides reiterated their intent to further deepen cooperation, particularly in forums addressing global peace and security.
Lavrov appreciated Pakistan’s proactive diplomatic role in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran, acknowledging Islamabad’s efforts to de-escalate tensions and promote peaceful engagement at a critical juncture. Pakistan has increasingly positioned itself as a key intermediary, leveraging its diplomatic channels to bridge differences between the two sides.
In response, Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s principled stance in favour of dialogue and diplomacy, emphasising that Islamabad would continue to contribute constructively to initiatives aimed at resolving conflicts through peaceful means. He highlighted that sustained engagement and trust-building measures remain essential for long-term regional stability.
The two foreign ministers also discussed coordination at multilateral platforms, underlining the importance of collective efforts to address emerging global challenges, including security risks and geopolitical tensions.
As part of efforts to maintain momentum in bilateral relations, Dar extended an invitation to Lavrov to undertake an official visit to Pakistan. Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact and continue consultations to advance cooperation across key sectors.
The conversation signals a continued alignment between Islamabad and Moscow on the importance of diplomatic engagement and strategic dialogue, even as both countries navigate a complex and evolving regional environment.
