Wasim Khan expected to step down as ICC general manager in June

LONDON: Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief executive Wasim Khan is expected to leave his role as general manager of the International Cricket Council (ICC) after four years in the position.

A report said Wasim is likely to give up the post at the end of June and is set to move into another role the following month.

His expected departure comes amid a wider turnover in senior ICC positions over the past two years. Geoff Allardice has already been replaced as chief executive officer of the global cricket body by Sanjog Gupta.

During the same period, ICC Head of Events Chris Tetley and anti-corruption unit chief Alex Marshall were also replaced, with Gaurav Saxena and Andrew Ephgrave taking over those roles.

Tenure at the ICC

Wasim took over as ICC general manager in May 2022, succeeding Allardice after the latter was elevated to the chief executive role.

In the post, he dealt with a crowded international calendar as T20 and T10 leagues expanded rapidly around the world. During his time in office, the ICC's Future Tours Programme for 2023-27 saw an increase in the volume of international cricket. The period also included the introduction of the first women's Future Tours Programme.

Career in cricket administration and playing background

Wasim Khan was born in Birmingham in 1971. His parents had migrated to the United Kingdom from the Bhimber area of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

He became the first British-born Muslim to play county cricket and featured in 58 first-class matches and 30 List A games across spells with Warwickshire, Sussex and Derbyshire.

He was also part of the Warwickshire squad that won the County Championship in 1995 and averaged around 50 with the bat that season.

After his playing career, Wasim moved into cricket administration. In addition to his stint in a senior role at the PCB, he has served as chief executive of Leicestershire County Cricket Club and the charity Chance to Shine.

His expected exit would mark another senior-level change at the ICC as the governing body continues to reshape its leadership structure.
