Bayern beat Stuttgart 4-2 to seal 35th Bundesliga title

BERLIN: Bayern Munich secured a record-extending 35th Bundesliga title after beating Stuttgart 4-2 at home, with Harry Kane scoring his 32nd league goal of the season.

Raphael Guerreiro, Nicolas Jackson and Alphonso Davies also found the net for Bayern, while Chris Fuehrich and Chema Andres scored for Stuttgart.

Bayern only needed a point to clinch the title after Borussia Dortmund suffered a 2-1 defeat at Hoffenheim on Saturday, their second loss in as many matches, leaving the title race effectively decided with four games still to play.

Coach Vincent Kompany rotated his side ahead of Wednesday’s German Cup semi-final against Bayer Leverkusen, leaving regular starters Kane, Michael Olise, Manuel Neuer, Aleksandar Pavlovic, Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah on the bench.

Stuttgart went in front after 21 minutes through Fuehrich, but Bayern responded emphatically and scored three times in seven minutes. Jamal Musiala set up Guerreiro for the equaliser before Luis Diaz provided assists for Jackson and Davies in the space of four minutes, giving the hosts firm control before halftime.

Kane added another goal early in the second half to put the result beyond doubt and help Bayern wrap up another league crown. With the outcome settled, the home side eased off, and an assistant was seen bringing bags of 2026 Champions t-shirts to the sideline. Andres pulled one back for Stuttgart with two minutes remaining, but Bayern were already preparing to celebrate.

Bayern’s domestic dominance continues

The latest title underlined Bayern’s long-standing grip on German football. The Bavarian club has now won 13 of the last 14 Bundesliga titles, and no other team has reached double figures in total league championships.

Bayern have also produced a remarkable attacking campaign. Their tally of 109 goals is the highest in Bundesliga history and eight more than the previous record set in 1971-72, with four matches still left in the season.

The team now has 79 points and a goal difference of 80. If the standings were to remain unchanged, Bayern would become the first side in Bundesliga history to finish with a goal difference higher than their points total. Winning all four remaining matches would take them to 91 points, matching the mark set by the club’s treble-winning team in 2012-13.

There are also individual milestones in sight. Kane, who became the first Englishman since 1930-31 to reach 50 goals in a season across all competitions on Wednesday, has scored 32 times in 27 league appearances and still has an outside chance of matching Robert Lewandowski’s single-season Bundesliga record of 41 goals. Olise, meanwhile, has 18 assists, three short of the all-time record set by Thomas Mueller in 2019-20.

Other Bundesliga results

Earlier on Sunday, Freiburg beat bottom side Heidenheim 2-1 at home. Johan Manzambi gave Freiburg the lead after 24 minutes, but Budu Zivzivadze equalised just before the hour. Maximilian Eggestein then scored the winner with seven minutes left, lifting Freiburg above Eintracht Frankfurt into seventh place.

The result left Heidenheim, who hosted Chelsea in the Europa Conference League last season, seven points behind the relegation play-off place and 11 adrift of safety with four games remaining.

In Sunday’s late match, Mainz rescued a 1-1 draw at Borussia Moenchengladbach when Nadiem Amiri converted a penalty in the seventh minute of stoppage time.
