Xi, Sánchez push for deeper China–Spain ties, call for multilateral unity

BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called for expanded cooperation between China and Spain across key sectors, including trade, new energy, and the intelligent economy, while also urging stronger exchanges in culture, education, science, and sports.

Xi made the remarks during a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who is on an official visit to China.

Emphasizing the need to seize emerging opportunities, Xi urged both countries to pursue innovation-driven development and deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership to deliver tangible benefits for their peoples.

Despite an increasingly uncertain global environment, Xi noted that China and Spain have maintained stable relations, guided by shared interests and strategic foresight. He highlighted that strengthening cooperation aligns with global trends and enhances both nations’ confidence in pursuing independent and self-reliant development paths.

Calling for closer alignment in foreign policy priorities, Xi said both countries should support each other in safeguarding sovereignty and territorial integrity, while positioning bilateral relations at the forefront of their diplomatic agendas.

He also underscored China’s commitment to modernization and high-standard opening-up, stating that the country’s development would continue to inject momentum into global economic growth.

Against the backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions, Xi warned of a growing divide between rule-based order and power politics, urging China and Spain to stand together against a regression to the “law of the jungle.” He called for strengthened communication, mutual trust, and cooperation to uphold genuine multilateralism.

The Chinese president further stressed the importance of defending the international system centered on the United Nations and maintaining an international order grounded in law, while promoting inclusive globalization and a balanced multipolar world.

For his part, Sánchez reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to strong bilateral ties, noting that his four visits to China in four years reflect the importance both nations attach to their relationship. He reiterated Spain’s adherence to the one-China principle and expressed interest in expanding cooperation in trade, investment, and new energy.

Sánchez also emphasized the need to uphold multilateralism amid global challenges, voicing support for China’s major global initiatives while opposing a return to Cold War dynamics and efforts to disrupt global supply chains.

He added that stronger engagement between Europe and China would serve mutual interests and contribute to global peace and stability.
