Awkward premiere moments fuel fresh scrutiny over Euphoria season three return

Los Angeles: Speculation about tensions surrounding Euphoria has intensified after a series of awkward moments at the show’s season three premiere in Los Angeles, where several of its biggest stars appeared to keep their distance during the event.

Much of the attention centred on Zendaya and series creator Sam Levinson. Cameras captured a brief interaction between the two before the actor moved on, without posing for the joint photographs many had expected. The moment drew online attention, with viewers also focusing on Levinson’s reaction.

The episode has been seen by some observers as a continuation of rumours that surfaced during the show’s lengthy break, when Levinson turned his attention to The Idol. Reports at the time said Zendaya had been frustrated by delays to the third season. Levinson’s side, however, had linked scheduling difficulties in part to her growing film slate, including Challengers and Dune: Part Two.

Zendaya publicly pushed back on the suggestion that her workload had held up production.

The premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre also prompted renewed discussion about Zendaya’s relationship with co-star Sydney Sweeney. Despite both being among the series’ central figures, they reportedly did not spend time together during the evening. Sweeney was seen with cast members including Hunter Schafer and Alexa Demie, while Zendaya arrived later and did not attend the official after-party.

Entertainment-industry speculation has linked the perceived distance to a combination of personal and ideological factors. Unverified claims circulating in entertainment circles have suggested that social dynamics involving Tom Holland, Zendaya’s partner, as well as perceived political differences between Zendaya and Sweeney, may have added to the strain. The same report said attention around Sweeney’s family event in 2022 and subsequent political associations also added to the speculation, though none of these claims have been confirmed by either actor.

Producers are aware of the discussion surrounding the cast and have discouraged the media from asking about any alleged feud during the current press tour.

Earlier public appearances contrasted with current speculation

The current narrative marks a contrast with earlier promotional cycles for the series, when Zendaya and Sweeney often appeared together. Sweeney had also previously spoken positively about Zendaya’s leadership on set.

At the same time, some people close to the production have described the feud narrative as exaggerated, saying the lack of interaction may be explained by scheduling pressures. Zendaya’s upcoming commitments were cited as including The Odyssey and Dune: Part Three.

Sweeney, meanwhile, has continued a strong commercial run following recent projects including The Housemaid.

Neither side has publicly clarified the latest speculation. For now, the premiere has left fans and industry watchers closely examining body language and timing as Euphoria moves toward its long-delayed third season, which is set to premiere on April 12.
