Peshawar police arrest two suspects in Dr Asif Malik

PESHAWAR: Peshawar police said they had traced and arrested two suspects in the attempted killing of noted urologist Dr Asif Malik within 24 hours of the shooting.

According to police, the attack on Dr Malik took place on the night of March 31 at about 11:05pm when unidentified gunmen fired at him as he was returning to his home from his clinic in University Town. He suffered multiple bullet injuries and was left in critical condition.

Police said a first information report, numbered 348/2026, was registered at Town Police Station under sections 324 and 427 on the complaint of his son, Yusuf Malik.

Officials said the case was challenging, but a Special Investigation Team formed for the inquiry solved it using scientific investigative methods and footage obtained through Safe City CCTV cameras. They said the video material was instrumental in identifying the suspects’ vehicle, a Suzuki Vezel carrying Sindh registration number BF-6845, and in tracking down those allegedly involved.

The two men taken into custody were identified as Sultan Reza Jan Khan, son of Muhammad Rafiq Khan, and Shafaat Hussain, son of Muhammad Nabi. Police said both are residents of the Astorzai area in Kohat.

During questioning, police officials said, the suspects admitted that the shooting was linked to a financial dispute with Dr Malik.
